The Running Summit comes to Columbia, SC as Running Summit Southeast, October 21-22.

The event will bring together top coaches, scientists, authors, and professionals in the sport to share their expertise:

Dr. Joe Vigil
Joe Vigil has coached Olympic and World Championship athletes to podium appearances in distances from the 800m to the marathon – including two of America's last three Olympic medalists in the marathon and recent Gold (800m) & Silver (1500m) medals in World appearances. His career at Adams State College produced 19 National Championships, 87 individual champions, and 425 All-Americans. Named NAIA Coach of the Year 14 times, Vigil's 1992 Adams team won the NCAA Division II Championship by scoring a perfect 15 points – the only cross country team ever to do so. Recipient of USA Track & Field's coveted 'Legend Coach' designation, Coach Vigil’s presentations will be PILLARS OF A SUCCESSFUL DISTANCE PROGRAM and THE DEVELOPMENT OF OLYMPIC MIDDLE DISTANCE RUNNERS – Featuring Practical Applications for High School & Collegiate Athletes.

Coach Tom "Tinman" Schwartz
Coach to National High School Indoor Mile Record-Holder and Footlocker National Champion Drew Hunter, Coach Tom "Tinman" Schwartz has directed training programs for and/or coached over 600 runners over the past 27 years. An exercise physiologist, Schwartz is a recognized master at applying empirical evidence to coaching practice. At the Summit, Tom will detail his use of Maximum Oxygen Consumption Training and Maximum Lactate Steady-State Training.

Dr. Bill Pierce
Dr. Bill Pierce, Professor of Health Sciences at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina is the lead author of Runner's World Run Less, Run Faster (2007, 2012) and Runner's World Train Smart, Run Forever (2017). More than 150,000 copies of RUN LESS RUN FASTER have been sold, including German and Portuguese translations. Dr. Pierce's speaking topics include Smart Training for the Long Run and Train Smart, Run Forever.

Dr. Russell Pate
Russell R. Pate, is a Professor in the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He has held several administrative positions including Chair, Department of Exercise Science; Associate Dean for Research, Arnold School of Public Health; and Vice Provost for Health Sciences. Pate is an exercise physiologist with interests in physical activity and physical fitness in children and the health implications of physical activity. He has published more than 300 scholarly papers and has authored or edited eight books. Dr. Pate's speaking topic is titled Training Kids for Performance Today and Running for a Lifetime.

Keith Scruggs
Keith is a PhD Student, Adjunct Professor, and Sports Performance Coach at the University of South Carolina. Prior to South Carolina, Keith served as an Assistant Sport Performance Coach within the Sport Physiology & Performance Department at the US Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY under Dr. Brad DeWeese. While at the OTC, Keith assisted in supervising the Speed & Strength development and athlete monitoring of Olympic, National, and developmental team athletes representing Team USA in the following sports: USA Bobsled & Skeleton, USA Luge, USA Karate, USA Canoe & Kayak. Keith will be presenting on Beyond the Barbell: Strength Considerations and Application for Distance Runners.

Dr. Toni M. Torres-McGehee
Dr. Torres-McGehee is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Torres-McGehee's research interests include eating disorders, body image, female athlete triad, sport nutrition, and prevention programs for collegiate dancers, collegiate athletes, and military personnel. She will be speaking on Identifying Low Energy Availability & With or Without an Eating Disorder among Collegiate Athletes.
